From Lauren Haarlow, Clinical Director, NCCDP
The last 16 months have been an incredible learning opportunity for me! Since becoming the Clinical Director at NCCDP over a year ago, I’ve been continually inspired by our participants and how they navigate their personal recovery and professional obligations. I’ve witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the NCCDP on the lives of dental practitioners and their families.
While I don’t believe personal recovery is a prerequisite for helping others in recovery, there’s an understanding that goes beyond words when you have experienced similar struggles. My personal recovery, coupled with other life experiences, has fostered empathy and a deeper comprehension of others’ challenges. I use these experiences to create an individual connection with the dental practitioner who needs help and support. My goal is to work alongside them in their recovery process. I have enjoyed getting to know each of our participants on an individual basis and understand their unique stories.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Addiction Specialist, I’ve never had the chance to delve into the hidden aspects of the dental profession. Before joining NCCDP, I lacked firsthand knowledge of dental practitioners and the additional pressures they face due to their unique role. My work with our participants and other dental professionals has provided me with invaluable insights into the specific challenges they encounter, particularly in terms of mental health issues, professional burnout, and substance use. My goal remains to reduce the stigma associated with these issues, enabling individuals to seek the necessary help and alleviate their suffering. However, the fear of professional repercussions often prevents licensed professionals from accessing the support they desperately need. It’s crucial for people to see NCCDP as more than a monitoring program but as a comprehensive resource for dental professionals and their families, helping without shame or judgment. At NCCDP, we can provide a wide range of resources to connect dental practitioners with the appropriate services to help them reach their full potential and reignite their passion for dentistry.
Sincerely,
Lauren Haarlow, Clinical Director, NCCDP
